Newquay Choral Society
Our Music

Our main concert programme during the year consists of a programme of Christmas music in early December and a more classical programme has for many years been on  Good Friday. In 2015 we chose to  present our Spring Concert at the end of April  and we shall be doing the same this coming April,2018 with our concert on Saturday April 28th. The concerts take place at St. Michaels Parish Church in Newquay, a magnificent church with wonderful acoustics, which was refurbished after a fire a some years ago. We performed regularly at Newquay Wesley Church on East Street in the past. Other venues have included Trerice Manor (National Trust property near Newquay), Eden Project and various hotels in the area.

We have in times past presented a programme of lighter music in June, often with guest artists, sometimes other choirs or musical groups.

As can be seen from the list of previous concerts, the composers of works performed vary from Bach to Karl Jenkins, and the December concerts often contain carols from around the world to add additional interest to the programme.

For the Spring concert we engage semi-professional artists to perform the solo roles, and often we have an orchestra in addition to the church organ to accompany us.

We were very fortunate to have as our President, for forty five years Sir David Willcocks,  who sadly died  on September 17th. at his Cambridge home at the grand age of 95years.He was born in and spent his early days Newquay.

He had a long and distinguished career in choral music and was decorated for War Service  with the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry.  He was knighted for his services to music in the Queen's Silver Jubilee Honours list in 1977.

He was always pleased to return to Newquay, and the Society in turn relished the time he spent with us encouraging us to improve our singing technique when he led workshops for us in 1998,2004 & 2007. In return, as often as possible we like to go to the Royal Albert Hall and join in "The Really Big Chorus"  which for a number of years was led by him to sing Messiah. We  extend our sincere condolences to Lady Willcocks and their three children.
